An Investigation into Conceptual Metaphors of WATER in English and Vietnamese Poetry

This study is conducted with the aim of identifying conceptual metaphors WATER in English and Vietnamese poetry. It seeks to find out similarities differences conceptualization two languages; then suggest some implications for teaching learning process. In study, descriptive, quantitative, qualitative approaches a contrastive analysis are employed. 150 samples taken from corpus poems 19th 20th centuries. The results show that ten both discovered within scope study. Both poets make use three types poetic reworking conventional metaphors, namely extending, elaboration, combining. Since meaning metaphor influenced by culture personal experiences, concepts might differ significantly across cultures.
